Fretwork, the leading UK Viol consort, bring their special brand of early music to St Luke's for the first time in a celebration of the great English compser Henry Purcell, in company with leading Welsh soprano Elin Manahan Thomas.

Purcell wrote many Fantasias for viol consort – the string quartet of the day - of which we will hear twelve, all written in 1680, together with some of his best known songs and arias.  The evening will be decorated with readings from the period, and be prepared to weep as Elin Manahan Thomas breaks your heart when she closes the concert with Dido's great lament When I am laid in earth from Dido and Aeneas, one of the earliest English operas..
